Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction Education in Shelters and Housing Initiative

The National Harm Reduction Coalition (NHRC), DOPE Project, and San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) is excited to introduce and roll-out, Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction Education in Shelters and Housing Initiative (OPHRESH). This two-year program aims to provide training, technical assistance, and support to all HSH-funded service providers toward integrating harm reduction and overdose prevention (ODP) policies and practices; as well as enhancing learning and engagement in to collectively reduce overdose deaths in housing and the Homelessness Response System (HRS).

The OPHRESH program is designed to: 

  • Improve and advance learning and engagement in harm reduction and overdose prevention to reduce overdose deaths in San Francisco’s Homeless Response System (HRS).
  • Build the internal capacity of agencies through engagement, workshops, and technical assistance.
  • Support successful implementation of HSH’s Overdose Prevention (ODP) Policy throughout all agencies.

Harm Reduction Workshop Series: Workshops will be held monthly, conducted virtually and facilitated by members of the HSH Team.

Workshops will include: 

  • Overdose Prevention and Naloxone administration.
  • Harm reduction and housing first.
  • Engaging with people who use drugs in housing and shelter settings.
  • Conflict prevention and de-escalation for service providers.
  • Self-care and resilience for service providers.
